• Lot n° 785 AN EXCEPTIONAL BAROQUE CRUCIFIXION GROUP H. 75 cm (gesamt) | Hardwood, slightly curved at the back and with its original polychromy. The group of Mary Magdalene, John and the fainting Virgin Mary is arranged in a slightly pyramidal formation on a stone plinth beneath the cross. The figure of Christ, of the ‘three-nail’ type, hangs with his head bowed from a movable crossbeam; the crown of thorns is made of woven branches. All figures are masterfully crafted with finely detailed drapery and pronounced facial features and expressions. At first glance, the fine craftsmanship gives the impression of a terracotta work. On the reverse of the group is a rectangular panel, added at a later date, bearing the monogram ‘W.E.B.’ in black. The group is mounted on a wooden plinth; the crossbeam, made of walnut, is of later date. Minor chips, restorations, additions.
