  • Lot n° 784 China, 19th cent. 114 x 78 cm Silk satin; embroidery: silk, satin stitch; gold thread appliquéd as contours. Probably patched together from separate panels. Border of silk fabric and appliquéd trims. Lining and hanging: cotton (light brown, dark green), plain weave. In the upper section, three medallions depicting sacred teachers (lamas) seated on lotus pedestals with halos behind their heads. In the lower section, nine additional similar depictions of lamas with different hand gestures (mudras). Some include names, possibly of donors, in ink; the three upper ones additionally bear a red seal.Such arched hangings were hung above areas intended to be marked as sacred.
