Born in Guadalajara, he studied at the Academia de San Carlos before spending more than a decade in Europe, where he absorbed Symbolism, Art Nouveau, and the emerging avant-garde. Returning to Mexico after the Revolution, he became one of the first artists commissioned by José Vasconcelos for the new cultural projects of the 1920s. His fresco El árbol de la vida (1922) is recognized as one of the earliest works of the modern Mexican mural movement. Montenegro's mature style blends European modernism with Mexican popular and pre-Hispanic motifs, reflecting both a decorative sensibility and a deep engagement with national identity. As both an innovator and cultural advocate, Montenegro helped establish a distinctly Mexican modernism, leaving a lasting legacy through his paintings, murals, illustrations, and efforts to elevate the country's rich artistic heritage.
