  • Lot n° 60 An important late 17th century walnut, parcel gilt and ebonised pier mirror with an extremely rare contemporaneous needlework border 1685-c.1700, the needlework surround overlaid with two associated second quarter 17th century oval inserts 1685-c.1700, the needlework surround overlaid with two associated second quarter 17th century oval inserts The rectangular bevelled plate within an ovolo moulded inner surround flanked by cavetto slips, encompassed by a border embroidered with abundant and assorted blooming flowers, fruit and foliage, butterflies, squirrels, exotic birds and dragonflies interspersed by six classical gadrooned urns replete with flowers and fruit, the centre of each side overlaid with an (apparently) earlier needlework portrait oval, one oval depicting a second quarter 17th century gentleman within a rural landscape and the other embroidered with a contemporaneous lady within a similar landscape, with raised work shaped stylised foliate spray angles, within an ovolo frame flanked by concave slips, the detachable cresting comprised of acanthus and husk pendant carved c- and s-form volute scrolls with a central foliate spray, on a 'pebbled' ground, surmounted by a central rearing hippocamp with a bifurcated foliate tail tip and issuing oak-leaf trails from its muzzle, flanked to one side by a foliate tree stump, 183cm high x 82cm wide.
