  • Lot n° 144 A very rare mid 19th century Patent gilt and patinated brass drum-cased night clock John Pace, Bury St Edmunds John Pace, Bury St Edmunds The drum case with ribbed sides and set on a pair of Ionic volute scrolls on a chamfered plinth with moulded edge on ball feet, the whole surmounted by a turned urn finial. The finial is set on a sliding base which is able to move forward to create an open chimney to release the smoke and heat from the lamp below. The rear cover signed PATENTED John Pace, Bury St Edmunds with shaped aperture and mounted with an oil reservoir for the internally mounted lamp. The movement with a platform escapement set in the base and wound from the rear which is also set with a fast/slow regulator dial, the hands driven via bevel gearing and vertical motion work to the dial above. The 3.5 inch dial with cast Arabic numerals on a skeletonised chapter ring set behind two panes of opaque glass with red silk between, with steel spade hands, all framed by a cast lotus-leaf bezel, the interior of the drum section is silvered and set with an angled reflector to increase night time visibility. Currently ticking. 23cms (9ins) high.
