  • Lot n° 289 Universal Genève - Polerouter Date A rare vintage wristwatch with centre seconds and date Ref. 104503 1, Cal. 215-1, Case No. 1948616, Dimensions 34 mm, circa 1968, Origin Schweiz Case: 18 K gold, screw back. Dial: Gilt. Movm.: Automatic. The Universal Genève "Polerouter" model was designed by Gérald Genta in 1954 and was on the market until the early 1960s. The "Polerouter" is the watch that launched the 24 year old designer's illustrious career. Universal Genève took its name from the fact that the watch was specially designed for the SAS (Scandinavian Airline System) pilots who flew the Royal Viking stretch from Copenhagen to Los Angeles that took them over the North Magnetic Pole, the so called polar route. At the time the price of an 18 K gold Universal Polerouter was equivalent to the price of a VW Beetle. The "Polerouter" was available in different materials and with several dial variations. This 18 K gold version features a gold-coloured dial with a high-gloss gold minute ring. Small fluted areas serve as hour markers. High-gloss alpha hands and the original UG crown complete the fine appearance of this vintage classic timepiece. Inside runs automatic calibre 215-1 with microrotor, which was patented in 1958 and made servicing the watch much easier because the mechanism was accessible without first having to remove the rotor completely. The "Polerouter" unites a fascinating history with attractive beauty and technical innovation. Case: very good, slightly worn. Dial: very good, slightly oxydized. Movm.: very good, capable of running, cleaning recommended.
