Lot n° 140
An interesting mid 18th century striking table clock
Benjamin Brandreth, Middlewich
The case surmounted by a brass knopped carrying handle over an inverted bell top and deeply moulded cornice, the sides with small arched panels (now filled), the front door, dial mask and rear door are later replacements, on a deeply moulded base and bracket feet. The 6-inch gilt brass dial with silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring and elaborate fleur de lyse half-hour markers, flanked by cast spandrels and framed by a wheatear-engraved border. The centre with matted ground surrounded by burnished floral engraving, date aperture, and blued steel hands. Signed Brandreth Middlewich between V and VII. The twin fusee movement united by four knopped and engraved pillars, with verge escapement, finely decorated crown wheel potences, and short bob pendulum behind a finely shaped engraved apron in the form of a love heart, inscribed JB & IP — almost certainly a marriage gift.
