  • Lot n° 124 A mid 17th century brass lantern clock with balance wheel verge escapement William Selwood, London A mid 17th century brass lantern clock with balance wheel verge escapement William Selwood, London The case surmounted by a robust turned urn finial over a large heavy bell secured in an X-frame by four matching finials on cast Doric columns to acorn-style feet, the top plate set with three pierced and engraved 'grotesque' frets centred by a shield, the front signed along the lower edge William Selwood at ye Maremaid in Louthbury fecit (sic), over four turned columns to each corner with the original brass side doors and an iron backplate, raised on four turned feet. The 7 inch brass dial with Roman chapter ring and cruciform half hour markers emanating from the inner quarter hour track, the centre engraved with a ring of flowers enclosing the Arabic alarm-setting dial with Tudor rose centre and single fettled steel hand, all framed by engraved foliate spandrels. The two train movement with (reinstated) balance wheel and verge escapement, striking the hours on the large bell mounted above via a heavy steel hammer and external count wheel, with alarm train mounted to the steel back plate, currently ticking and striking. 43cms (17ins) high.
