• Lot n° 1090 Adolf Schreyer (1828-1899) "Hunted by Wolves" Oil on canvas laid to canvas Signed lower right: Ad Schreyer; titled by repute 36" H x 63" W Provenance: Sold: Christie's, London, "19th Century European Art," May 17, 2016, Lot 151 Sold: Christie's, London, "19th Century European Art," November 16, 2006, Lot 79 Private Estate, California Visual: Overall generally good appearance. An unobtrusive, scattered, 2.5" v-shaped scratch with attendant scattered pigment loss to the left of center near the lower edge. A few unobtrusive, narrow, parallel, surface scuffs in the varnish layer, each approximately 2" high, through the lower chest of the rearing horse at center. Scattered stable craquelure throughout, and very slight wear or oxidation to the varnish layer in places, including near the upper left corner. The canvas has been relined, as mentioned, and has a newer stretcher and keys. Blacklight: An approximately 0.75" H x 1.25" W touch-up in the background below the snout of the central rearing horse. A similar yet smaller touch-up in the lower harness of the lead horse. Two parallel lines of touch-up in the trunk of one of the trees near the right edge. Touch-ups in a few places along the extreme edges. Possible scattered older touch-ups in the background. A heavy layer of varnish has been applied. Frame: 44" H x 70" W x 4" D
