A mid-18th century English green stained shagreen Nécessaire box with later leather foul weather travelling case and provenance to the 11th or 12th Earl of Home (2) The box of very slightly domed rectangular form, the hinged cover with gilt yellow metal studded formalised trailing floral and scrolling decoration, the sides with gilt yellow metal foliate bale handles, the front with matching pierced escutcheon and clasps, the interior lacking the original divided compartments and fittings and later lined in red plush velvet with replacement Victorian brass 'Patent Mordant & Co.' lock, the leather travelling case of a similar date with buckled straps embossed to the top THE RT HONBLE THE EARL OF HOME, 6 GROSVENOR SQRE, LONDON and with traces of the original red wax seals, the box, 41cm wide, 30.2cm deep 12cm high, the outer case 42cm wide, 43cm deep, 13m high (2)
