A rare and important set of four English carved oak heraldic newel post finial beasts representing the royal arms of good size, each formed as a lion, a unicorn, a dragon and a hound Late Elizabethan or early Jacobean, circa 1600 (4) Late Elizabethan or early Jacobean, circa 1600
All modelled sejant-erect regardant, each gorged with a crown-collar and holding a shield: the lion's shield with a crowned Tudor rose, the unicorn's with a crowned thistle, the dragon's with a crowned portcullis, and the hound's, with a crowned fleur-de-lys; all with traces of old and refreshed polychrome and gilding, on integral shaped bases, with some losses, repairs and restorations, the lion 61cm, high, 28cm wide, 29cm deep, the unicorn, 65cm high, 25cm wide, 28cm deep, the dragon 58cm high, 25cm wide, 33cm deep, the hound, 59cm high, 28cm wide, 30cm deep, all approximately (4)
