Peter Shire (b. 1947) A Pre-Memphis glazed ceramic charger, 1979 Dated and marked to underside: EXP [Echo Park] The footed plate with lavender glaze 1.5" H x 12.75" Dia. Other Notes: Peter Shire was born and raised in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, where he opened his studio in 1972. His style blends the structural simplicity of Bauhaus and Art Deco with the playfulness of Art Nouveau forms. During adolescence, Shire worked in his father's furniture shop, where he learned an appreciation for craftsmanship and practical lessons inherent in the manufacturing process. He later went on to study at Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. Eventually, his art caught the eye of Milan-based designer Ettore Sottsass (1917-2007), who invited him to join the Memphis design group, for which he designed two of their most iconic products: the Brazil table (1981) and the Bel Air armchair (1982). Additionally, Shire collaborated with the design team of the American Institute of Architects for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, creating public sculptures in Los Angeles and around California to celebrate the games. His work can be found in several museum collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the MAD Museum of Arts and Design in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. https://petershirestudio.com/about/ https://memphis.it/en/authors/peter-shire/
