  • Lot n° 176 Edith Baumann-Hudson (b. 1948) "Pale Gray #6, 1986," 1986 Acrylic on canvas Signed on the stretcher bar: Edith; titled and dated on a gallery label affixed to the stretcher bar 73.5" H x 60" W Provenance: Newspace, Los Angeles, CA Private collection, Malibu, CA Exhibited: Los Angeles, CA, Newspace, "Solo Exhibition," 1987 Other Notes: Santa Monica based American abstract painter Edith Baumann Hudson's work is characterized by vibrant geometric abstractions with layered textures that create a meditative precision and exploration into the balance of structure and subtle imperfection. Baumann Hudson was born in Ames, Iowa and earned her B.F.A. in 1975 from the University of California, Los Angeles. She completed her M.F.A. in painting at the University of Southern California in 1985. Baumann Hudson creates richly layered ground and finely applied pigment through a rigorous process. Beginning with hand-ground raw pigments, Baumann Hudson then applies multiple thin layers of color, and overlays delicate, almost ethereal lines to finish the composition. Together these components create a dynamic tension between bold color and black outlining that speak visually to notions of control and spontaneity, stillness and motion, and rigorous formality versus human gesture. Baumann Hudson has had numerous solo exhibitions including at Newspace, Los Angeles (1987, 1988), Rena Bransten and Modernism galleries, San Francisco (late 1980s–1990s), Beatrix Wilhelm Gallery, Stuttgart (1993), Parrasch Heijnen, Los Angeles (2018, 2020), and Franklin Parrasch Gallery in New York (2021, 2023). She has also been featured in group gallery and museum exhibitions, including at the Laguna Art Museum and Martin Museum of Art at Baylor University.
