An early Mexican sombrero Circa 1860 The pale brown-toned wide brimmed round hat with a low tapered flat crown, likely woven of palm straw, with an added double plaited leather corded band covered with leather strips 3.5" H x 19.75" Dia.; Interior: 21.5" Dia. Overall good condition with dust accumulation and wear commensurate with age and use. The hat with patchy applied brown varnish or stiffener overall. The crown with rubbed wear and scattered areas of darkening under the band, and the brim edges with rubbed loss of pigment staining in places. The hat band with multiple losses to leather covering, with stiffening and soiling to cordage overall, and with repaired break.
