• Lot n° 41 A Mexican Aggregate Period pictorial sarape of Santa Anna Late 19th century Woven with wool weft on cotton warp in tones of blue, green, yellow, and red, in two panels seamed down the middle featuring a central medallion depicting Santa Ana, flanked by two large flowers on a multicolored geometric block patterned field with a floral garland border and striped banded ends with long fringing 78.5" H x 45.5" W approximately Other notes: This late nineteenth-century textile combines a finely executed tapestry weave with the uncommon depiction of General Antonio López de Santa Anna, shown standing with drawn sword at the center of the composition. While portrait sarapes are rarely encountered, examples depicting identifiable historical figures are particularly scarce and reflect the growing incorporation of patriotic and political imagery into Mexican weaving during the late nineteenth century. The central medallion is framed by a stepped geometric field woven in brightly colored aniline-dyed wool, bordered by striped end panels. The design is characteristic of the bold color combinations and geometric patterns found in Mexican textiles of the period. Overall good condition with dust accumulation and wear commensurate with age and use. The weaving is ruckled in places. Fringe with ravelling and losses to a few strands, and with overall darkening to strands.
