• Lot n° 32 Empire of Annam, c. 1885 H. 50 / 85 mm Example of the second model of the Knight's insignia, awarded as a French colonial order from 1896 to 1946. French manufacture. Silver, of multi-part construction. The central medallion is gilt and enamelled, while the sculpturally executed dragon surmount is also enamelled. No discernible hallmarks. Mounted on its original green-and-yellow ribbon for civil merit.Accompanied by a letter from the Governor-General of French Indochina, Hanoi, dated 20 March 1885, informing the recipient of his appointment as a Knight of the Imperial Order of the Dragon of Annam by the Emperor of Annam. The letter further states that the official award diploma would be forwarded at a later date. From an old German diplomat's collection, assembled prior to 1920 - The order was established in 1886 under the Nguyễn Dynasty and was later incorporated into the French colonial honours system of Indochina. It was awarded in recognition of distinguished civil and military service and was conferred upon both local and foreign recipients. The present example belongs to the Knight class and represents the version commonly issued during the French colonial period
