  • Lot n° 275 Erica Rutherford, British/Canadian 1923-2008 - Untitled, c.1960s; watercolour and paper assemblage, indistinctly signed lower right 'Rutherford', 34 x 34.7 cm (ARR) Note: Rutherford exhibited with the Leicester Galleries from 1961-64. Rutherford was both one of a few female artists working in the 60s and 70s and further one of the first openly transgender British/Canadian artists. Her work was recently included in 'Women in Revolt!' at the Tate Britain in 2023-2024 and works from the late 1960s and 1970s were included in 'Foreigners Everywhere' at the 2024 Venice Biennale. The National Portrait Gallery, London recently acquired her work. She will be the subject of a cross-Canada exhibition, entitled 'Erica Rutherford: Her Lives and Works', from June 2024 to July 2027 across seven Canadian institutions including the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.
