A fine and rare mid 18th century metal-mounted ebonised Four train musical table clock playing six tunes on eight bells and sixteen hammers. The case possibly attributable to John Holl. William Tomlinson, London William Tomlinson, London
The brass-banded case surmounted by urn finials over pierced and engraved sound frets framed by four further finials to each corner framed by engraved plaques featuring human face masks, the sides with large pierced and engraved brass sound frets almost identical to those used by Holl, framed in brass and set to each corner with bold stop-fluted Doric pilasters, the front door glazed with brass banding terminating in a large inverted break-front moulded base with further brass banding, raised on four (later) ball feet.
The 7 inch arched brass dial with a silvered arc offering a choice of tunes including Galloping Nagg; the Happy Clown ; Hannover March; Granadeers March; Lilli Culero; and Minuett (sic) framing the rolling moon-phase and Moon's age dial below, signed across the upper border William Tomlinson, London between twin subsidiaries for Strike/Not Strike and Chime/Not Chime. The silvered Roman and and Arabic dial with half-quarter marks and floating fleur-de-lys half-hour marks, the matted centre with mock pendulum and calendar apertures framed by cast brass spandrels, with blued steel hands.
The four train, quadruple fusee movement with converted anchor escapement set on the backplate, rack striking the hours on a polished bell mounted above, striking the quarters on a nest of eight bells and playing a selection of tunes on a nest of eight bells and sixteen hammers via a pinned barrel, the back plate fully engraved with scrollwork around the central signature cartouche. 54cms (21.5ins) high.
