  • Lot n° 209 James Michalopoulos (b. 1951) Garden District cottage, New Orleans, 1998 Oil on canvas Signed lower right: Michalopoulos; signed again and dated "1998" verso; with the artist's label affixed verso 40" H x 30" W Other notes: James Michalopoulos is celebrated for his vibrant, expressionistic portrayals of New Orleans architecture, culture, and music that seemingly pulse with energy and movement. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Michalopoulos graduated from Bowdoin College and moved to New Orleans. While primarily considered self-taught, Michalopoulos attended art classes at the University of New Orleans and the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts and also observed other local artists working in Jackson Square. His early work as a street artist selling paintings in the French Quarter evolved into a successful career marked by a distinctive style, characterized by bold colors, exaggerated perspectives, and fluid, textured brushwork, that captures the soul and energy of New Orleans. Over the decades, his art has become iconic, reflecting the charm, mystery, and resilience of the city he calls home. Known best for his architectural and street scenes, Michalopoulos has also gained recognition for his dynamic still lifes and portraits of jazz musicians and cultural icons, which celebrate the spirit of New Orleans through sound and motion. He has served as the official artist of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival six times, and his works have been featured in galleries around the world. In addition to painting, Michalopoulos has explored sculpture and even ventured into winemaking with his estate in Burgundy, France. Yet, it is his artistic contribution to New Orleans that remains most enduring - his canvases serve as both a visual love letter and a historical record of one of America's most historic cities.
