  • Lot n° 233 Japan (1760 - 1849) 25,5 x 37,5 cm (o.R) Ôban yoko-e. Woodblock print, ink and colour on paper. Title: Surface of Lake Misaka, Kai Provence (Koshu Misaka suimen). Series: Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjurokkei). Signed Zen Hokusai Iitsu hitsu. Publisher: Nishimura Yohachi (Eijudo), circa 1830-32. From a private Berlin collection, assembled from the 1980s through the early 2000s We are looking at Mount Fuji from the shores of Lake Misaka. Bathed in the soft, diffuse light of the morning, the mountain appears in delicate gradations of pale orange. A solitary boatman, carrying his load, glides across the lake’s calm waters, while on the opposite shore thatched dwellings nestle among gentle hillocks and a dense forest of pine trees. Mount Fuji’s reflection appears slightly off-centre in the water. Intriguingly, the mountain’s snow-covered summit is clearly visible in the reflection, although it cannot be seen on the mountain itself. This subtle optical device draws the viewer’s attention to the mirrored image of Mount Fuji and may suggest the coexistence of two different seasons or perhaps two distinct aspects of Japan’s sacred mountain.
