  • Lot n° 83 Japan, early Edo period 83,3 x 84,5 cm / 85 x 88 cm Two panels. Ink and sparingly applied color on a gold ground. The left panel depicts a bird perched on a branch. The branching structure is highly simplified and accompanied by Prunus blossoms as well as additional twigs bearing dark red peonies. The lower section is composed of spiral and geometric patterns, possibly to be interpreted as a stylised representation of a reed-woven fence. The right panel continues the branch into a deliberately empty field, thereby creating a balanced contrast between a densely ornamented and a more reduced pictorial zone. From an old German aristocratic collection, in the family since the 1970s - Traces of age, restored, on the reverse dents and further old rest.
