  • Lot n° 17 Mugnier, Paris, c1800, A rare early 19th century French ormolu skeleton clock with signed inverted Y-shaped frame, surmounted by an orrrery. No winding key. Mugnier, Paris The inverted Y-shaped frame signed to the rear Mugnier, a Paris applied with cast mounts of swans, flowers and laurel wreaths (the latter framing the winding squares), on a pair of pedestals to a rectangular plinth on turned feet, all surmounted by an intricately made orrery depicting a gilt brass sun, turned, revolving moon and earth (with printed and coloured scales) above an engraved silvered brass scale giving cardinal points, date and Zodiac information. The 4-inch white enamel chapter ring with outer band divided into half-minute intervals, and Roman hours, framed by a pair of cast ormolu bezels, with good blued steel Breguet style hands and counterbalanced seconds hand. The twin spring barrel movement with delicate wheelwork, highly polished pinions and fine pinwheel escapement to a heavy nine-rod gridiron pendulum mounted on a knife-edge at the apex of the frame. The strike train with outside countwheel, striking the hours and half-hours on a vertical bell between the plates. The orrery train powered direct from the strike train via a vertical drive rod connected to the countwheel. Ticking and striking. 46cms (18ins) high.
