  • Lot n° 100 Philip and Kelvin LaVerne (1907-1987 and b. 1937) A 'Fragonard Pierced' coffee table from the 'Historical Civilizations Series,' circa 1960s Etched signature to top: Kelvin Philip LaVerne The patinated and pierced bronze table, decorated with gold and copper leaf accents over floral filigree and cloisonné enamel figures below a glass top 17.5" H x 60" W x 24" D Literature: Evan Lobel with Kelvin LaVern, "Alchemy: The Art of Philip and Kelvin LaVerne" (New York: Pointed Leaf Press: 2024), pp. 30 and 85 Other Notes: The 'Fragonard Pierced' Coffee Table is among the most technically demanding and rare designs created by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, the visionary father-and-son duo who defined their work as "functional art." Made in the 1960s as part of their Historical Civilizations Series, the table features a patinated bronze and pewter surface meticulously hand-pierced by Kelvin LaVerne. This piercing process produced delicate filigree and openwork, animated with cloisonné enamel and layers of gold and copper leaf beneath an inset glass top. The composition, populated with Asian figures and animals, reveals the LaVernes' signature blend of Eastern and Western artistic traditions, transforming a utilitarian form into a sculptural narrative. In "Alchemy: The Art of Philip and Kelvin LaVerne" (2024), Kelvin recalls the extraordinary physical toll of producing these tables - cutting each bronze sheet by hand was so arduous that his hands would often be bloodied in the process. This testament to the labor and devotion involved makes the 'Fragonard Pierced' design one of the most celebrated works in their oeuvre. The LaVernes pioneered experimental techniques - acid etching, layered patinas, and even burial of metals to achieve unique surface effects - but the hand-pierced works stand apart for their rarity and difficulty. Coming from the collection of Kelvin LaVerne himself, this table exemplifies the duo's uncompromising commitment to artistry, where innovation, endurance, and vision fused into timeless, collectible design.
