A French gilt copper and champlevé enamel cross Limoges, circa 1190-1220 (2) Limoges, circa 1190-1220
The centre engraved with the figure of Christ crucified, his hair and beard finely delineated, his chest similarly with outlined ribs and clad in an outlined folded perizonium, all with traces of original gilding, Christ's bowed head encircled with a radiating stylised, iron red, yellow, turquoise blue and white halo, the cross with a central green and yellow band, the outer blue borders with inner rounded cross sections punctuated with styled roundels and flower heads, the top with engraved stippled plaque inscribed, IHS, the base with Christ's feet highlighted on a turquoise blue panel, above stylised arched scale decoration, together with a modern metal stand, the cross, 21cm high, 12cm wide, the cross mounted on its later stand, 18cm high overall approximately (2)
