  • Lot n° 131 A set of four George III giltwood open armchairs 1770-1775, in the French taste (4) A set of four George III giltwood open armchairs 1770-1775, in the French taste Each with lotus-leaf carved and opposing lotus-leaf pattern moulded and channelled frames, the cartouche shaped back with a beaded inner surround, the arched toprail carved with a drapery garland surmounted by two addorsed scrolled acanthus sprays, with foliate wrapped, volute scroll capped and stiff-leaf clasped arms, above a shaped and beaded seat frame centred with scrolled acanthus surmounted by a drapery garland, on square tapering legs headed with flowerheads, the rear legs slightly splayed, terminating in lotus-leaf wrapped feet, re-gilt, the chairs are made of beech wood that has been gilded, one chair has an applied ivorine antique dealer's plaque which reads: 'G. JETLEY, 24 Bruton St., Berkeley Sq., W1', the other chairs appear to show signs that they were also previously applied with this same plaque, 69cm wide; seat depth: 57.5cm; 102.5cm high. (4)
