A good and rare early 19th century French ormolu and marble 'greatwheel' skeleton clock timepiece with pin wheel escapement and fusee movement The inverted 'Y' shaped frame with burnished and matt decoration, the three front angles applied with lions mask mounts, on leaf-cast supports to a white marble base with beaded border and ormolu mounts, all supported on ball-and-claw feet. The 2.75inch enamel Roman dial with outer minutes and open Breguet style moon hands to the open centre revealing the star-shaped centre wheel. Chain fusee movement with 5.75 inch diameter great wheel of eight tapering crossings, the further wheels of five- and six-crossings, terminating in a delicate pin-wheel escapement, over a large spring barrel with skeletonised caps front and back, set between the lower supports. Now mounted on a mahogany base and sitting under a panelled glass case (old damage to the rear panel). Sold together with a winding key, ticking. 35cms (13.75ins) high.
