  • Lot n° 4023 A Chalcidian helmet, variant of type V, 4th century B.C. Bronze helmet, originally tinned over its entire surface, the tinning still clearly visible on some areas. The skull is divided into two halves by a blunt central ridge and separated from the lower helmet wall by a distinct, inward-retracting shoulder. The lower helmet wall is provided with protruding arches at the cut-outs for the eyes, while the ear cut-outs have an edge moulding protruding perpendicular to the helmet wall. Between the eye arches a shortened, only hinted at nasal. Behind the ear cut-outs, the edge of the helmet is extended approx. 6 cm downwards on both sides to form a rounded flap, which merges at the back into an arched, upwardly extended neck guard with vertical walls. Along the edge the rim of the neck guard is set approx. 5 mm outwards. The cheek flaps with straight sides are rounded at the bottom and connected to the helmet wall by a five-part hinge, two bushings belonging to each cheek flap. Surface partially with slight traces of corrosion and small cracks. Minor chipping on the underside of one cheek piece and on the edge of the right half of the neck guard. Otherwise an excellently preserved, beautifully shaped antique helmet with no missing parts or additions. The helmet type belongs to a regional variant of later Chalcidian helmets from the northern Black Sea region. Height 31.5 cm. Maximum width 18.7 cm. Length 23.5 cm. Condition: II -
