A rare and important late third quarter 17th century walnut veneered, Dutch-striking table clock Joseph Knibb, London Joseph Knibb, London
The restored case with shallow caddy top surmounted by a turned ball finial and concave moulding, framed by four matching finials to an overhanging cornice with architectural drip rail and intricate mouldings set on four twisted three-quarter columns with carved Doric capitals and bases, the sides and rear with glazed observation windows, all supported by a substantial moulded base on four turned bun feet.
The brass dial measuring 8 1/4inches x 8 1/8inches with a narrow silvered chapter ring, the minute band with Arabic five-minutes marked within the band, Roman hours with fleur-de-lys half hour markers emanating from the inner quarter hour track, the finely matted centre with matted winding shutters and deep chamfered date aperture and finely finished "Oxford type" blued steel hands, all framed by single screwed winged cherubs head spandrels. Secured to the movement front plate via four latched dial feet
The fine Phase I twin gut fusee movement with large plates united by ten knopped and latched pillars, the front plate split in two to allow for easier access of the separate going and striking trains; the former with verge escapement to a short pendulum with engraved hexagonal rating nut; the latter striking the hours twice each hour (once on the full hour, another on the half-hour, in the so called Dutch manner) on a pair of bells and hammers via an external count wheel engraved with tulip and floral decoration. The back plate finely engraved with tulips and sprigs of foliage, signed in a curving arc Joseph Knibb, Londini fecit above the figures of Father Time and Cupid. Currently ticking and striking. 57cms (22.5 inches) high.
