He continued his studies at The American Academy of Art in Chicago and took graduate courses under intaglio printmaker Mauricio Lasansky at the State University of Iowa. At the beginning of his career, Cook focused on printmaking. Moving to the painted medium, early works featured still-life subjects of singular objects such as a flower, wheel or box like the present work. While small in size and in muted colors, these works were defined by expressive impasto paint application. After the 1970s and his marriage to artist Joan Brown, Cook began to paint the landscape, particularly solitary buildings in the delta area of the Sacramento River. His work also included floral still life, nudes, portraits and cityscapes.
