Born in Stuttgart, he fled Nazi Germany in 1939 and immigrated to the United States, later studying with Hans Hofmann in New York. Hofmann's emphasis on color relationships and compositional pull became a lifelong influence, and Kahn absorbed aspects of Abstract Expressionism while also admiring the tonal subtlety of 19th-century American landscape painters such as George Inness. He drew inspiration from the structural clarity of Cézanne, the atmospheric mood of the Impressionists, and the bold chromatic intensity of Matisse and the Color Field painters. Splitting his time between Vermont farm life and the New York art scene, Kahn developed a signature style that combined vibrant color with simplified depictions of barns, trees, and fields. In "Foliage in a Lemon-Yellow Surround," Kahn pushes the boundaries of landscape painting by transforming the natural motif of foliage into a radiant and luminous field. Instead of depicting leaves or trees in detail, Kahn dissolves forms into hazy shapes and gestures, as violet and lilac patches suggest clusters of trees, while softer greens and pinks evoke shifting vegetation. His ability to merge European modernist principles with the American landscape tradition has made his work distinctive and widely celebrated. Today, his paintings are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among others.
