The arabic inscription dedicates this pair of bowls to Sultan Ma'ud Mirza Yamin al-Dawlah Zill al-Sultan, in the year A.H. 1297 [1879/80]. Prince Masoud Mirza Yamin al-Dawla Zill al-Sultan (1850-1918) was the oldest son of Nasr el-Din Shah, who became the Qajar governor of Ispahan in 1872. He was renowned for his cruelty and for destroying a number of Safavid period palaces.
