  • Lot n° 106 Ɏ A LARGE AND SUPERB IVORY NETSUKE OF KAN’U Unsigned Japan, 18 th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The large ivory netsuke of early triangular sankaku type, depicting the God of War Kan’u (Guan Yu) standing stroking his beard with one hand, and holding his dragon-bladed halberd down with the other. His loosely fitted robe, tied at the waist with a belt, and with billowing sleeves is neatly incised with cloud patterns. The details neatly engraved and stained. The back with generously excavated, asymmetrical himotoshi. The ivory bearing a super yellowish patina and polish. HEIGHT 9.2 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and expected age cracks. Provenance: Ex-collection Jury Kolodotschko. Lempertz, The Kolodotschko Collection of Netsuke II, 6 December 2014, Cologne, lot 762. A private collection in Luxembourg, acquired from the above. Kan’u, the Chinese hero Guan Yu, epitome of the loyal warrior, deified as the God of War, first appeared as one of the Three Heroes of Han in the early Chinese novel Shui-hu chuan, “The Water Margin”. He was a popular subject for Japanese netsuke carvers, especially during the early, most robust phase of development.
