Throughout his prolific career, Dalí embraced printmaking as a way to explore and disseminate his surrealist visions to a broader audience, producing hundreds of technically sophisticated etchings, lithographs, and wood engravings. His prints often mirrored the dreamlike, symbolic world found in his paintings, drawing on themes of religion, mythology, and psychoanalysis. Dalí's print work remains a significant part of his artistic legacy, blending fine craftsmanship with the bold, bizarre imagery that defined his unique vision. Dalí composed "Symphony Bicyclette" in 1970, as a tribute to his friend Harpo Marx. In the surrealist composition, musicians, most prominently a harpist, play on the prow of a ship sailing into a sea of cyclists as it heads toward the sunset and a wall of dancing flames. The visual wordplay of the central "harpist" represents Marx as well as the longstanding friendship and hijinks between the two men, dating back to their 1936 meeting in Paris. Dalí first encountered Marx at a Parisian party, where the Surrealist comic was in the midst of performance art, standing naked in a garden surrounded by harps. The following Christmas, Dalí sent Marx a gift of a full-sized harp that had been wrapped in cellophane with spoons replacing tuning knobs, cutlery glued on the frame, and strings made of barbed wire. In reply, Marx sent Dalí a photo of himself playing the harp, his fingers wrapped in bandages. "Symphony Bicyclette" is at once a deeply personal reflection of friendship while also exhibiting the humorous absurdity unique to Dalí and indicative of his best work.
